National Trails Day

Here is a special event that you might be interested in.
Hank Greeb of the Mad River Radio Club announces the following:
Not precisely a contest announcement, but we WILL be participating, to the extent possible, in the CQWPX CW contest!

Please be advised that on Saturday, May, 30, between 1600Z and 2000Z, 4 or more hams from the Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan will activate W8T as part of the Michigan Chapter, North Country Trails Association's National Trails Day Celebration.

We will have two or three HF stations on various bands and modes – primarily on CW and SSB.  We will self spot on and on the regular DX clusters, such as  Also, look for CW spots on the, specifically by putting
in your browser.
IF the above long url gets truncated in transmission, try this itty bitty url:

We hope there will be many members of the public attending the celebration, guided walks along the trail, etc., who are interested in finding out about ham radio.  So, if you think about it, please look for us on the bands, and give us a shout.

We will have a special QSL available for those interested.  See the W8T QRZ page for details.  Also, shortly after I'll put all the QSO info into the Logbook of the World.   If I ever figure out e-QSL, I'll put the info there, also.

Hope to see as many MRRC Ops as possible on Saturday.

For you contesters out there, here's one of the big ones.

For the last weekend of May, a big event: the CW portion of the CQ WW WPX contest!
The rules are similar to the SSB WPX Contest, which took place last March.

Again we stress that the focus is on working as many prefixes as possible.

On CQ magazine web site, you can find the exact definition of ‘prefix’ and its exceptions.  Complete rules can be found here:

The contest will be taking place over the full 48 hour period of Saturday and Sunday (UTC time). A list of stations that have announced their participation can be found at Good hunting!

Net Night at the Clubsite

Tomorrow, Thursday May 28, 2015, is Net Night at the Clubsite!  Doors will open at 6:30PM and will remain open until the end of the movie.
So, stop on out and take the opportunity to check into the nets from the PCARS clubsite.  Looks like I'll be the Net Control Op – so make sure you check in and give me a big count for the PCARS net.
As soon as the PCARS net closes, we'll start the movie.- Dr. Strangelove – a classic movie from the cold war era.  Who remembers "Duck and Cover" from their elementary school days?  There was a lot of hysteria about "The Bomb" in those days, and this movie makes fun at it all.
Please – bring some snacks to share, there will be "Theater" style popcorn and beverages.
Hope to see you there.

Field Day Meeting

Field Day Staff & Other interested members:
As Rick just posted, we will be having a Field Day meeting this evening at 7PM at the club site. Staff members, please try to attend.  I want to make sure that if there are any needs, potential problems, etc, that we get a handle on them before our event.  If all is in order, this might be a short meeting but I am guessing that we will be there at least an hour.

Stuff for sale

I received the following if anyone is interested:

I was contacted this morning by my wife's brother's widow saying they were cleaning out some stuff at her dad's and they had some  palomar linears and some "CB stuff" they wanted to sell off. I have no idea if a ham could use any of this stuff. If anyone is interested, please have them contact me and I'll get a phone number so they could talk directly to see if the stuff is useable. They are in the Akron/Green area. Randy Thorpe KD8ZSH
