DX/Contest SIG

PCARS Members:

A week from tonight (Tuesday, April 24, at 7PM) we will be holding our DX/Contest Special Interest Group meeting at the club site. Since we will be participating in the Florida QSO party that takes place on the 28th & 29th, we will be doing a brief review of the rules and also planning how we will set up the 4 operator positions for the contest. We will also discuss if we can set up a 5th position for Search & Pounce operating.

If you plan to operate during the contest, please attend the meeting.

Looking forward to seeing many there. Until then….

April Monthly Meeting – Monday April 9, 7 PM
This month we are going to have a great speaker. Jim Storms AB8YK will be talking about the Youth DX Adventure to PJ2T. These adventures are a great opportunity for young hams. PCARS supports these activities and Jim can show us what results from our support. We will also have a great 50/50 and enjoy getting together to discuss our great hobby. Please plan to attend and have a great time.
Makerfaire Kent State – Friday April 13, 11-4
Makerfaires are a great opportunity to see what is happening in electronics, rapid prototyping, the arts and new technology. PCARS has taken part in the Kent State fair for a couple of years and it has always been a lot of fun. Lots of people have stopped by to see what ham radio is all about. The age range of the visitors covering young students to the retired provides a great opportunity to get a lot of interest in ham radio. If you would like to help us represent PCARS let me know. You will have a great time, help introduce ham radio to all ages, and see some new stuff.
GOTA/Project Event – Saturday April 14, 9-12 Noon
If you would like to work on a project or run the club stations, the club will be open from 9 till noon. If you are or know of a Tech that would like to try HF this is a great time to do it. The lab will be available for working on projects. If you need any help with your projects or need a question answered, help will be available.

We are starting our Spring 2018 Technician Class Wednesday April 18th. If you know of anyone interested in getting their license, have them contact me (Jim, AC8NT) or simply show up for the first session. The cost is $25 (free for PCARS members). Each student will need a copy of "Ham Radio License Manual". These will be available for purchase the first night of class. They are also available from the ARRL or DX Engineering. The class lasts for 8 consecutive Wednesdays with the last session a VE test session where the license exam will be offered.
Club Site Open House and VHF Room Dedication – Saturday April 21, 10-3
If you have not been to our club site in a while, please plan to attend our upcoming open house. Operation of our club stations will be available; the lab will be open for use; and snacks will be served. Most important will be the ceremony dedicating the VHF room to Jim Aylward SK, one of the founding members of PCARS. The ceremony will held at 1 PM. There will also be equipment from Jim's estate available for purchase.
Net Night at the Club – Thursday April 26, 7 PM

New Technician Class

We have scheduled a new Technician class. The class will run for 8 consecutive weeks each Wednesday from 7 PM to 9 PM starting April 18th. The eighth night is a VE test session where students can take the exam ($15 dollar ARRL test fee required).

We really need people to register for this class. We will need a minimum of three students to hold the class. If you know of someone interested in getting his license, please have them contact me at or call 330-342-8149.

The cost of the class is $25. No fee for PCARS members. Each student will also need a copy of “Ham Radio License Manual”. These books can be purchased from the club the night of the first class or from the ARRL.

This is a great opportunity for those interested in ham radio to get the knowledge to pass the test and the skills to get on the air.

If anyone would like a copy of the flier to post, just let me know.

Jim, AC8NT
