Bouvet DXpedition

Attention PCARS DXers:
Many of you have been asking me about the Bouvet Island DXpedition. Well here’s the latest:
3Y0I BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION (Update, dated March 19th). The following was posted on the 3Y0I Web page [edited]: The 3Y0I DXPEDITION HAS BEGUN —
The 3Y0I Bouvet Island Expedition has officially begun. The MV Atlantic
Tuna, with the Team aboard, departed for Bouvet Island on March 19, 2019, at approx. 6:00 UTC. If everything goes well, we should reach Bouvet in 7 days around March 26th. Landing on the Island will be strictly dependent on the weather conditions met upon arrival. ***Estimated*** launch date of 3Y0I on the air might be about last days of March. This information may be subject to change (sea and weather conditions – safety first!). The Team plans to stay at the island at least for 2 weeks, with an option to extend the stay to 3-4 weeks, if weather and other factors permit.

Tornado Warning Test

Hey everyone!
You should already know that the Ohio statewide tornado drill is set for Wednesday, March 20 at 9:50AM. Several people have asked about taking this time for another test of the statewide DMR net, and that sounds like a great opportunity!
I don’t want to take manpower away from your local nets, so let’s try a ~fast~ check-in net on the Ohio DMR Talk Group (3139) starting at 0930. That should give everyone time to check in and get back to your local Skywarn weather nets. We’ll call two districts at a time, in numeric order.
Wednesday, 0930 on Ohio
Hope to hear from you!!

March Meeting with Carole Perry

March Meeting with Carole Perry
This month’s meeting is this coming Monday. As I am sure you have heard, Carole Perry WB2MGP will be our speaker for the evening. We will be meeting in the big room at the American Legion Hall in Kent.
We are asking those that wish to eat before the meeting to come early and eat in the smaller room we normally use for our meetings. This will allow for better service. Also, all refreshments that night need to be purchased at the bar. The full meeting including the business meeting will start at 7 PM sharp in the big room. There will be a sign-in table as you enter the big room where you can sign the roster, buy your 50/50 tickets and see our prizes before the start of the meeting.
Carole will be speaking on her role as a Radio Club of American (RCA) Director and as Chairperson of RCA Youth Activities, RCA Youth Activities include supporting STEM classes, Scout Troops, ham radio in schools, radio classes in museums and technology programs in Youth Groups.
This program promises to be great. Please plan to attend. If you know a teacher or youth group leader, please invite them to the meeting. We expect an excellent turnout.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there.

QSO Parties at the Club

Attention All PCARS Contesters:
The PCARS Black Squirrel Contesters will once again be putting K8BF on the air during this weekend’s Idaho and Wisconsin QSO Parties.
Action starts at 2PM on Saturday when the Idaho QSO Party begins. This is a 24 hour contest and you need 24 hours to find all the Idaho stations. Hint – there aren’t that many. The festivities continue on Sunday when the Wisconsin QSO Party begins at 2PM. This contest runs until 9PM and is well attended by the many Wisconsin HAMS.
We usually play in the Idaho contest until we don’t hear any more stations that we haven’t worked. This means that we don’t run 24 hours but work until early evening. We go home and get a good night’s sleep and return on Sunday to work the WIQSO Party.
Come on out and join your fellow PCARS members and have some BIG FUN. See you this weekend.

Tape Measure Yagi and Balun Build Day

We will be holding a build day on Saturday March 23 from 9 AM till 1 PM at the club site. We will have two projects you can build.
The first is a tape measure 2 meter Yagi antenna that can be very useful for fox hunting or reaching that repeater that is just a little too far away. The project cost is $27 for the parts.
The second is a 1:1 or 4:1 balun for HF that can be used for low power transmission. We will be making the balun using toroid construction and it will be enclosed in box with hangers, connections for the dipole and a PL-239 connector for the coax connection. The project cost is $20 for the parts.
Each of these projects can be completed in a couple of hours. There will also be a short presentation on how each project works and applications will be discussed.
I need to know by Friday March 8th if you are interested in building either or both of these projects. That will give me time to make sure all the materials are ready for the event. If you are interested or have any questions, please email me at and indicate which project you would like to build.
