Need Your Help – Club Security

Over the last couple of weeks we have had a couple of security issues. Today when I visited the club the lab was unlocked and the door to Unified Services (the door to the restrooms) was not pulled close. Also I received a call earlier this week from Unified Services indicating the door between their area and ours was open with the deadbolt extended. They secured the door and I thanked them for paying attention.
Please remember to make sure all the doors from the club site to the outside or other areas of the building are closed and locked before you leave (Lab, door to restrooms, outside door, and garage doors). I would hate to see some of our gear go missing.
Thanks and 73,
Jim, AC8NT

Antenna Day Confirmed for Saturday June 1st

Rick K8CAV received the OK from the Freedom trustees for Antenna Day Saturday June 1st.
Tony still needs some additional volunteers. So if you haven’t already volunteered and would like to do so, let Tony know at tromito99@gmail.com.
The event will start at 9 AM and run till about 3 PM. This is our chance to test our stations and prepare for a great Field Day.

Important Field Day Information

Two important pieces of Field Day news!
  1. The Field Day Team is trying to reschedule Antenna Day for June 1. This is a tentative date. Contact is being made with Freedom Township officials to get approval for this date. Watch the portcars.org website and our QST emails for more information on Antenna Day.
  2. Field Day Dinner (the Saturday night of Field Day) is free for all members. If you bring a guest, the cost is $5. It will be catered and we must have a solid count of those who plan to attend. If you are planning to eat, you need to contact Paul Hyland at phyland@neo.rr.com and let him know how many will be there including guests. You must let him know by no later than June 1st.
  3. Breakfast Sunday will also be catered and will cost everyone that eats $2. Again you need to let Paul know how many will be eating by June 1st.
  4. There is a donation button on our website that allows you to donate to the Field Day Fund. Please consider a donation, no matter the size. If everyone in the club donated just a little it would cover our expenses for this great event.

Welcome to my Dayton Hamvention 2019 QST!

Welcome to my Dayton Hamvention 2019 QST!
I hope that I will get to see a whole bunch of PCARS members in Dayton this year. This is the “Show of all Shows” – and it’s right in our own backyard! You’ve got to get there, for the whole weekend, or just a day. It doesn’t matter – JUST GET THERE! It will change your whole outlook on Ham Radio.
I will be there (along with Chuck – W8PT), checking in on Thursday night. Dinner for us on Thursday will be at The Dublin Pub – 300 Wayne Ave. Dayton, OH 45410. If you’d like to join us, give me a call (330-554-4650) and I’ll let them know you’re coming!
Friday morning I hope to be there when the doors open, I’ll be headed straight for the ARRL booth (it’s in Main Building #2) to make all my ARRL purchases. Saving on the shipping costs is well worth it, and they do sell out of stuff early (especially Field Day Shirts). If you’re there Friday, I would also suggest the Carol Perry Instructor’s Forum from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. After that, I’m sure you’ll find me wandering around somewhere, wishing I could take it all home with me!
Saturday morning my tradition is Bloody Mary’s in the parking lot – somewhere between 7:30 and 8:30 AM. Once again, give me a call, I’ll accommodate as many as I can!
After that, it’s off to the Carol Perry Youth Forum (9:15 – 12:00). Lots of good presentations planned here, check them out!
The ANNUAL PCARS GROUP PHOTO will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday! Please, don’t be late – photos will be snapped at 2:00PM SHARP! You can find us in the bleachers between Main Buildings 2 and 3. After all the rain we’ve had already, I’m expecting a beautiful weekend at Hamvention! If you cannot be there for our group photo, get someone
to take a photo (or 4) of you there, and email them to me at ( tomsly29@gmail.com ). I’ll try to come up with a group photo in “collage” form. If you see someone from PCARS there, take their photo and send it to me, just in case!
One last thing I want to mention: At our May meeting, our speaker will be Jim Storms AB8YK. Jim will be talking about the Youth DX Adventure program. PCARS will be making a donation to this years trip, however, if you are able, I would ask you to make a personal donation – you can either give it to Jim at our meeting, or, you can present it to them at their Hamvention booth. Whatever the amount, it will be money well spent for the future of Amateur Radio!
73, and I’ll be looking for you at Hamvention.

PCARS May Meeting

I hope you all plan to come to our May meeting this Monday, May 13th at the Kent American Legion Post 496, 1945 Mogadore Rd. Our speaker will be Jim Storms and the topic will be Youth DX Adventures. Jim has a lot of experience with these events so it will be a great presentation.
We will have a great 50/50 and a great time as usual. If you haven’t picked up your PCARS coffee mug, they will be available. Just a couple of additional notes:
  • Please check the member roster on our website to make sure your information is up to date. If it is not, please send the correct information to Gene Marsh W8NET at w8net@me.com.
  • If you get a chance Errol KC8RJR could use some support. I am sure he would welcome a QSL card or note. He is a great guy and is working through some medical problems.
  • We will be rescheduling Antenna Day and I am sure Tony could use a few more volunteers. Let him know if you are interested. Please watch your emails for the new date for the Antenna Day.
Hope to see all of you at the meeting Monday. Come out and have a great time.
Jim, AC8NT

Antenna Day Postponed

Antenna Day originally scheduled for this Saturday has been cancelled due to poor field conditions. Recent rains and expected rains later this week have made field conditions unusable.
Both Rick and Tony visited the site today and along with township workers decided the field was way too wet to setup the stations. The Field Day team is working to reschedule Antenna Day possibly for the first Saturday in June (June 8th).
A QST will be sent when the new date is firm.

Antenna Day at Freedom Township Park this Saturday

Just a friendly reminder that in preparation for Field Day we are holding an Antenna Day this Saturday May 11th. The test will be conducted between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM. If you would like to help please let Tony WA8AR know by sending him an email at tromito99@gmail.com.
If you have not been there before, our Field Day site is the Freedom Township Park, located just southwest of the intersection of State Route 700 and Streeter Rd. From Ravenna take State Route 88 north to State Route 700 north. The park is on the left, just under one mile after you cross over the Turnpike, traveling up SR 700. You will see a storage building, the open shelter and a baseball field on the left. The park is not well marked, but still pretty easy to find.

New England QSO Party Update

PCARS Members:
Well, the group of us who participated in this contest decided to call it quits a little early. We were hearing nothing but dupes and were only working 1-2 contacts per hour, and we had 3 hours to go. We had had enough fun for one weekend.
We didn’t do too badly. We ended up with 9100 pts compared to only about 3500 last year. I will be putting out a full report in a couple of days.
Thanks goes out to all who showed up. You really helped putting K8BF on the air. Until next contest…
