From Gene W8NET
As you may know, I launched a new program 6 months ago called Scouts on the Air. Tomorrow (Tues 9/30), local amateur radio volunteers in IL (details below) are helping me introduce ham radio to a Scout troop (age 11-17) and their leaders & parents. We will host multiple stations (shown below) and we will be on-the-air for approximately 45 minutes. Would you please share this information with others and perhaps set an alarm to listen and try to give these Scouts a QSO? Together, we can make some great memories for everyone and perhaps spark some interest in our hobby!
“Scouts on the Air”
DATE: Tuesday 9/30
TIME: 7pm to 7:45pm CDT (8-8:45pm EDT / 5-5:45pm PDT)
LOCATION: Wheaton Illinois, 24mi/39km West of Chicago (EN51wu, CQ4, ITU-8)
CALLSIGNS & TARGET FREQUENCIES:
40 meters as K9MSG on 7.227 (else 7.235)*
DMR as NE9JJ on BrandMeister 3100 USA Nationwide Bridge Talk Group
On the local UHF K9XD repeater as W9LBR
*NOTE: I will update our frequencies at the top of my QRZ.com page where you can presently see details about this event similar upcoming events with other troops.
If you’re able to help, thank you! If you are not available or can’t hear us, we certainly understand and we hope you will try again at future events (listed here).
As always, we won’t have much time to train the kids, leaders & parents so this will be rather informal. Feel free to ask a question (age, favorite scout memory, favorite badge, other hobbies, etc.) and share something about you (location, age when you became licensed, favorite amateur radio activity, where you grew up, other hobbies etc.). That said, please keep QSOs brief so they might each talk with several operators.
Each Scout will also receive an 8-page packet about our hobby that discusses how radio waves work, radio lingo, sample log, RST tables, safety, emergency calls, how to pursue the Radio Merit Badge, and more. While this experience certainly won’t qualify them for a Radio Merit Badge, our group will help any interested Scouts in that pursuit.
Once we’re off-the-air, we will run a mock ham radio quiz game where they break into teams and ‘buzz-in’ to answer questions and show what they’ve learned – wish them luck. We hope to post some photos after the event on my QRZ.com page and/or Scouts on the Air.
