Please join us on the 5th Tuesday of August for a double-barrelled hands-on session:
Tube Testing
Joe W8KNO has kindly made available to the SIG his B&K 747 Dyna-Jet dynamic mutual conductance tube tester. This tester far exceeds the capabilities of your old drug-store tube checkers we may have used years ago.
So, if you have a project underway or awaiting the famed Round TUIT to get started, bring tubes and we will check their condition and performance. Please remember there is always the slim possibility that the testing process might kill your (thought it was good but it really wasn’t) Device Under Test so the risk is yours. Joe may be present or on Zoom to answer questions.
Toroid Identification
Based on Jim AC8NT’s February 2023 Radiogram article, we will go through the process of measuring known and unknown toroids. Jim will loan us his LCR meter for the session, as well as a drill jig for removing the coating on a toroid to get a reliable measurement.
So: bring that pile or bag of mystery toroid cores from your bench and junk box, and bring your LCR meter if you have one. We’ll step through the process that Jim outlines in his article. You may want to look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q95Vwk3kZok this YouTube video too, in advance of the session.
I look forward to seeing you there! 73 de Rick KD8WCK

Any mistakes found in the newsletter are there on purpose so some of you can have fun finding them…. The Radiogram is the monthly newsletter of PCARS. Every month, we bring you news, events, DX listings, articles, and lots of fun. All of the issues, dating back to the very first, are on the club website (http:www.portcars.org) for you to download and read. Amateur Radio articles are welcome. Send your submission in .txt (text) format to the editor: newsletter@portcars.org
There will be NO net-night at the clubsite this week! (There will be a PCARS net as usual)
Instead, we will have our net-night at the Clubsite Next Week on August 31st! This will coincide with the first night of W1AW/8 being run from the PCARS club site. More details to follow.
Don’t forget – PCARS needs operators to fill our “Club” slots, but you can also sign up at other times as an individual and operate from your home station. If you would like to sign up as an individual, BUT operate from the club site, let Nick or myself know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
